About the Montaigne Exemplaire Images interface
This page provides ways to find and access high-resolution images of the Bordeaux copy of Montaigne's Essais. Users can simply click the links provided above to see entire books or individual essays. Alternatively, the keyword search feature generates results that offer links to pages within individual essays where the word occurs. Keyword searches can be narrowed using a specific essay title. Search results can be sorted by essay order or by ranked relevance of the search term. Search by essay title alone is not enabled.
For full-featured text search and analysis, please see the PhiloLogic builds of the Essais.
The high-resolution images are displayed in a IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) viewer. The viewing platform draws on a IIIF manifest, a JSON file that contains metadata about the images and technical instructions to the server regarding image delivery.
Our image manifests include transcriptions of the hand annotations in the Exemplaire. The transcriptions display by default in a collapsible sidebar on the left.
The Montaigne manifests are publicly available so that users can work with the images across platforms and alongside digital objects from other IIIF collections. Complete sets of book, essay, and page manifests can be found following these links: book manifests essay manifests page manifests complete work
